Comparative Analysis of Traditional vs. Sustainable Chilled Water Plant in KSA

Syed Mustafa Ali
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer | Al Hamdan Consulting Office, Al-Khobar, KSA

This report investigates and compares the energy, economic and environmental advantages of sustainable chilled water plant design methodologies with traditional design methods in Saudi Arabia. The constant flow primary only system and constant-flow-primary / variable-flow secondary chilled water systems are generally considered to be traditional design methodologies while the variable primary flow chilled water system is considered as sustainable design methodology.

There is an ever present need for large capacity storage tanks in sectors ranging from water and sewage to fuel and chemicals to silos for grains and building materials. The current demand for these tanks are met by Concrete, Steel or FRP Panel tanks. These tanks require maintenance time-to-time be it reapplication of paint and fiberglass linings in the concrete tanks or the application of cathodic protection in steel tanks or replacing the worn out rubber gaskets in the panel tanks.

Shaping the future of the Water Industry

Dr. Emad Al-Juraifani
General Manager | Future Resources, Saudi Arabia

"New Environmental Problems cannot be solved with Old Techniques !"

The vast industrial boom around the world have resulted in new environmental problems, in addition, to the existing chronicle ones. Using the old techniques to overcome these problems in most cases is not practical nor economical. The innovation pace is not matching the pace of the new environmental issues and their impact on the different aspect of mankind.

Benefit of certifying Organizations and Facilities to ISO 50001 (Energy Management System)

Hamza Al Khateeb
P. Eng,CEM,Vice Chairman, HVAC Standards Committee | Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia

ISO 50001 certification provides organizations with an internationally recognized structure for implementing an energy management system. ISO 50001 will help companies in identifying the necessary tools and approaches to address the energy efficiency and conservation measures in a structured manner.
Certification to ISO 50001 provides an organized approach that incorporates energy management into the company culture, which will result in continuous improvement in energy performance over time, this can help justify initial investments in energy projects and ensure return on investment. ISO 50001 is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act structure. These stages will involve conducting energy review and establishing the baseline and energy performance indicators (EnPIs), implementing energy conservation measures and taking actions to continually improve energy performance.

Khalid Ahmed
Business Development Manager | IES Alliance for Management of Industrial Projects, Bahrain

We are seeing the demand for energy and resources is increasing year on year and there is no stopping. The energy demand in turn places heavy demand for fossil fuels, which are responsible for global warming and climate change. Several renewable source of energy are available but more investment and favorable government policies in this sector are required. Biogas is one such alternative that carries huge potential where every country can derive several economic and environmental benefits.

HVAC trends vs. temperature in high dry city

Numair Alamdar
Mechanical Engineer | Alitco, Dubai

Air conditioning applications and solutions are not limited to a specific applied System; they have various applications and methods to be used in order to reach the right air conditioning solution. Therefore, from different experimental case studies, of major applications of Air conditionings, in Riyadh city, the selected target study of the research, HVAC projects mostly are going based on copy and paste terminology, especially the private sector projects and some of governmental projects, on trend manner persuasion only. In currentdays there are many arguments about the right solution selections of HVAC systems, and those arguments had been appeared after the Dubai recession in 2008, and the consequences of using the massive air conditioning stations(district cooling) and the related negative impacts in economy, thus, the requirements of understanding the trend of HVAC application first, is far better than using the bright idea of certain companies to use certain system rather than other systems

Building re commissioning and Retro Commissioning case studies

Muhammad Abbas
Saudi Aramco | Saudi Aramco, Saudi Arabia

Buildings Re-commissioning and Retro-commissioning Case Studies
This paper discusses significant findings and recommended solutions resulting from the retro-commissioning and re-commissioning of over twenty (20) buildings. The findings discussed in the paper relate to base and retrofit design improvements, operation and maintenance activities optimization, control sequences corrections and changes, low-cost equipment upgrades, and pipes and ducts re-configurations. Many of identified energy optimization opportunities had no-cost or low- cost of implementation resulting in an overall payback of less than two (2) years and, in many cases, a few months. The initiative also identified opportunities for capital upgrades with relatively longer payback time but significant energy improvement potential.

Performance energy analysis on commercial air cooled chillers

Mohd Hameed & Khalid Naser
Johnson Controls Saudi Arabia | Johnson Controls, Saudi Arabia

Focus on real time data on the air cooled chiller performance under commercial segment. Usually In gulf countries, chillers consume the major portion of energy
bills, which reach as high as 50% of total energy cost. All the chillers manufacturers are coming up with the leading technology, optimum design and delivering the most energy efficient chillers in the industry. There was a need to check the actual performance on the real time climate scenario to verify the actual savings to the end user. We took the lead in conducting energy analysis on different leading brands of air cooled chillers in eastern province of Saudi Arabia with respect to chillers age, constant or variable speed compressors, evaporator, and condenser coil.
